Discover “kikkakekko”: A Hidden Gem for Artisan Ceramics and Glassware in Shiga

Just a short train ride from Kyoto, in the peaceful town of Ōtsu, Shiga, you’ll find a charming shop called kikkakekko—a treasure trove of locally crafted ceramics and glassware.

One of the highlights here is the “biwako_iro” series — a collection of glassware made by melting aquatic plants from Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. Each piece has its own unique color pattern, reflecting the ever-changing hues of Lake Biwa itself. Sometimes it’s a serene blue, other times a soft green—just like the lake depending on the season and light.

In addition to the Biwako-inspired glassware, you’ll also find a carefully curated selection of ceramic pieces made by local artisans from Shiga, as well as other handmade items and lifestyle goods from around Japan. Every item has a story, chosen with care by the shop owner and staff.

This is ceramics made from clay from Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture.

These are accessories made from Biwa pearls harvested from Lake Biwa.

A Cozy Café Upstairs

Upstairs, there’s a relaxing café where you can enjoy specialty coffee. In spring, the cherry blossoms blooming along the nearby canal create a breathtaking view—perfect for taking a break and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

Don’t miss their original coffee blend, “Sosui Blend,” named after the historic canal flowing beside the shop. The canal itself has recently been designated a National Important Cultural Property, making this area even more culturally significant.

How to get there

You can reach kikkakekko from Kyoto by taking the Keihan Line from Sanjo Station toward Hamaotsu, then transfer to the Sakamoto Line and get off at Miidera Station. It’s just a 5-minute walk from the station and located on the way to the famous Miidera Temple, making it a perfect stop before or after your temple visit.

If you’re looking to explore the slower, quieter charm of Japan outside the city, kikkakekko offers both beautiful crafts and a relaxing moment to enjoy local life.
