Hikone Castle offers a stunning view of Lake Biwa.
From Kyoto Station, you can reach Hikone Station in about 50 minutes by JR.
From the station, it’s roughly a 15-minute walk to the castle.
Built during the Edo period, Hikone Castle has over 400 years of history, and its main keep is designated as a National Treasure.
Although compact, the castle’s surroundings—its moat and impressive stone walls—create a powerful and beautiful scene.

During autumn foliage and cherry blossom season, the white castle walls contrast beautifully with the colors, attracting many visitors.
I visited just as the autumn leaves were beginning to turn, and the soft gradation of colors was absolutely gorgeous.

Speaking of Hikone Castle… it’s all about Hikonyan!
Japan has many local mascots called yuru-chara, and one of the most famous is “Hikonyan,” the mascot of Hikone Castle.

Hikonyan is inspired by a white cat wearing a samurai helmet.
Its slow, relaxed movements and adorable poses make it a beloved, heart-warming character.

Hikonyan appears three times a day at scheduled times.
Check the official Hikone Castle website or on-site information boards for the daily schedule.

There are plenty of Hikonyan goods available inside the castle grounds and in nearby souvenir shops.

My personal recommendations are the drip-bag coffee and the clear file folders.
Even Japan’s iconic capsule toy machines (gachagacha) often include Hikonyan items—don’t forget to try one!
